Therapist Musings

10/02/2021

So it has been a minute since posting anything; however, I’d like to say that I have good reason. Lots has changed in the past few weeks….I’ve officially moved offices! Admittedly, this was bittersweet because I had been in my “old” location for about 5 years, BUT this new space is AAAHHHHMMMMAAAAZZZZIIINNNGGGG! I’m not longer an island and have multiple colleagues. Seriously, this has been my vision for so long. Collectively, we are Haven Holistic Healing and made up of mental health providers, psychiatric nurse practitioners, massage therapists and a nutritionist. Reach out to schedule in the new location at 131 Indian Lake Road Suite 102, Hendersonville, TN 37075 (by appointment only).

Hump day has arrived and is technically my “Friday” of the week. Lately that hasn’t been the case. Over the past year, there has been an exponential increase in people seeking therapy (that’s great, but also bittersweet). So, as much as I would love to boast about my healthy boundaries, I have been adding telehealth sessions on my off days. It has been difficult to pause adding new clients or turning individuals away….especially when, let’s face, they aren’t in the best place of their lives. I’ll write in another post about the need for providers who accept insurance, BUT also the need for insurance companies to increase reimbursement rates for practitioners.

Back to my thought….what I’m seeing mostly is high numbers of clients with anxiety, trauma and fear. So let’s talk about this. I recently saw a TikTok (don’t judge- it’s my guilty pleasure) where a woman was speaking about fear and how she felt that “we as a society” have been groomed for fear. I didn’t go down the rabbit hole with this, nor did I request any peer-reviewed, scholarly articles; however, it gave me pause. Mainly because I swim in trauma with clients and quite frankly, fear is a frequent theme woven into the very thread of negative beliefs about ourselves. This isn’t turning into a politically driven post so hold yourself back from yelling at your screen or going elsewhere, but I’ll say it. We live in a society in which we receive hundreds of messages a day (no, not necessarily text or email) from external sources telling us what we should believe, how we should act, what we should do – the list goes on and on. And the subtle and sometimes not so subtle messages received include (but are not limited to): fear for not following, fear for being judge, fear for physical safety, fear fear fear fear fear fear. So I lied earlier, I did in fact start a search for articles that would help educate me a little more on this and one in particular is where I started. If you are interested, check it out at https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3595162/ regarding the Biology of Fear. I’m still on the path of learning more about this and the implications fear has on our brains (remember I said that this blog was also about my journey of learning?). So I’m sure there will be a follow-up post at some point.

Welcome to my blog where I “try” to write on a regular basis to serve an educational purpose for my readers and let’s be honest, to help me process events and/or issues that arise through my practice. Some posts may be funny in nature and others more serious, but either way, I hope you enjoy reading and following as I experience life and grow.

With saying, errr typing this, I ultimately wanted to introduce my go-to method of EMDR in addressing your fear. If you aren’t familiar with this approach, I’ll write more about it this week. It’s worth the read. Trust me. Game changer.
